NTSB presentation at Shell

YPP will be sitting in on a presentation by Richard Klasen speaking on his first-hand account of the Bellingham, WA pipeline incident. On June 10th, 1999 a 16-inch pipeline in Bellingham, Washington ruptured releasing gasoline into a creek that was ultimately ignited. The incident resulted in the loss of three lives, eight injuries, and damage to surrounding structures and environment. The presentation and subsequent discussion will include a first-hand account of the events and decisions that preceded the incident, details of the incident, and areas the industry improved following the incident.
Richard Klasen comes from a family that has been in oil and gas since the 1890’s and has been a pipeliner himself for 44 years and counting. His past positions include Control Center, before and after the computer age, Pipeline Scheduling, Power Optimization, Operations Field Supervisor, Engineering Assistant, Pipeline Integrity and Regulatory Compliance.
